    My friend Hiroko translated this:

I had a dream about you that was sad and happy.

Please remember this is only my dream. I don't know so clearly what you think or feel about me, and if I'm wrong you can correct it.

My husband Mitchell and I went together to registration for the new term, I as student, he to help out as a faculty member. He felt good returning after the pandemic layoff, remote learning. The scene he usually dreaded, chaotic scene, tables set up for teachers filling out rosters for their courses, students shopping for classes to fill out their weekly schedules, administrators manning computer terminals to keep all the records straight and updated now didn't bother him at all. I was just there to choose a class or two- I'm not studying for a degree. We planned to have lunch together when Mitchell finished.

Shortly after we arrived he ran into an old student of his waiting on line to confer with teacher about a course. We stopped to greet the young man named Bob and he said, "Are you bored?" Like he himself was, he meant. The morning chaos, organized though it was, had pushed his patience. People as young as him had less than someone Mitchell's age, who appreciated the scene he'd missed and was willing to tolerate aspects of it that would under ordinary circumstances have bothered him as much as they did his former student, Bob, big twenty year old with black square framed glasses that went with his black hair framing a squarish face.

"No. We're excited," Mitchell said, speaking for himself and me.

    "Why?"

"To be back with friends." Faculty and students alike, he meant.

The student grinned unreadably. Mitchell couldn't guess what was in the mind of someone over two decades younger than him. I know he often wondered what was in my mind, too.

He realized he'd forgotten student tests he was supposed to have brought. The originals had to be filed that day and they were still at home. He had to go back and get them, leaving me alone. We would not have lunch as planned after all.

Don't forget to do this and that, Mitchell's boss said before he left. Mitchell asked a question to be clear. His boss, named Ray, an old friend, reminded him, "Leave enough space," explaining that the test papers should not be packed too tightly in the file where Mitchell would put them for the permanent record.

Mitchell wondered about some clips needed to keep the tests of different courses separate. He told me, as the question came to his mind, that he wasn't sure if he should do the filing on his own or ask for help from someone.

He wanted to do it himself, didn't want to look like he needed help.

"I should get used to managing that kind of task on my own," he volunteered, as I waited for him to leave.

    "I should learn how to."

    I nodded, distracted.

"I've been at the job long enough," he added.

I stifled a yawn. In fact, I hadn't slept well that night. For some reason.

"The problem is that the way things are ...
